Rogue is a 1980 dungeon crawler where you explore procedurally generated levels, collect gear, fight monsters, and manage limited resources. Every decision matters because death resets your progress. The game mixes adventure, role-playing, and strategic planning as you navigate twisting mazes with limited visibility. It became a staple on college Unix systems, where its replayability and challenge hooked players for hours. Rogue’s influence comes from its random map and item generation, which made no two runs alike. Though basic by today’s standards, its open-ended design inspired a whole genre now called "roguelikes." The game’s code was widely shared and modified, leading to countless clones and variations. Still, the original remains a template for hardcore, single-player dungeon crawling.
