RubyDung was an unreleased strategy prototype by Markus Persson made before he had any idea what Minecraft would become. The game focused on base building and drew heavy inspiration from Dwarf Fortress while trying to stay accessible to a wider audience. Players managed resources and built structures in a world Notch called the Rubylands. The code eventually served as a foundation for his next big experiment after he saw Infiniminer change his perspective on block-based worlds. This project never saw a full release, so there are no community ratings or player statistics to share. Its main value lies in being the direct technical ancestor of Minecraft rather than a finished product people can play today. The early prototypes showed strong performance but lacked the multiplayer elements that would define the genre later. Notch decided to scrap the project entirely once he realized his new direction was more promising. What remains is a glimpse into how one developer's early ideas evolved into something that changed gaming forever without any flashy marketing or grand announcements.
