About Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin dropped on November 10, 2020, as an indie adventure RPG from developer Edelweiss. You play as Sakuna, a harvest goddess exiled to Hinoe Island alongside banished humans. The setting is a demon-plagued land where you must clear monsters and grow rice to survive. XSEED Games published this title for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch in a single-player experience. The game asks you to balance brutal combat with the slow rhythm of agriculture across four distinct seasons. It is not just about swinging a sword but understanding the full lifecycle of grain production while keeping your village alive against the odds.

Gameplay

Your day splits between two distinct loops. The first involves crossing 2D environments as a platformer to fight demons using farm tools and a magical celestial scarf for grappling. You must dodge attacks, manage stamina, and time your strikes carefully against various beasts. The second loop happens back at the mountain village base where you plant seeds, manage water levels, and harvest rice. This process requires monitoring growth stages across seasons to increase yield quality. You use the crops to craft weapons that improve your combat stats or cook meals that restore health and grant buffs. Each season changes the available resources and enemy types, forcing you to adapt your farming strategy while grinding through tougher dungeon sections to progress the story.

What Players Think

Critics gave Sakuna a solid 80 on Metacritic, but the PlayPile data shows something more specific about player retention. Our community members clocked an average of 28 hours per playthrough with a 74 percent completion rate for main story achievements. The mood tracker indicates a split vibe where players love the farming depth but find the combat repetitive after twenty hours. Users frequently mention the unique pairing of genres as the strongest hook, yet notes on forums suggest many stop playing once they master the rice mechanics. Review snippets highlight the high achievement count of 35 as a barrier for casuals who just want to relax. The community feels the game is best enjoyed by those willing to commit to both systems equally rather than skipping the simulation parts.

PlayPile's Take

This title costs around $29.99 on most platforms and offers thirty-five achievements to chase. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin works well for players who enjoy grinding mechanics without feeling overwhelmed by complexity in either loop. The combat gets tedious for some, but the rice farming provides a genuine sense of progression that few other games deliver. It is not for people who want pure action or zero preparation time. If you can handle slow pacing between battles and appreciate detailed simulation work, this game stands out from standard RPGs. Finish it to unlock every achievement and see if the dual gameplay loop sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Storyline

Long ago, the spoiled Princess Sakuna enjoyed a life of leisure in the Mihashira Capital among the gods and spirits of Yanato. But on the floating bridge of heaven separating the immortal Lofty Realm from the Lowly Realm of mortals, a chance encounter with the children of men (or, as they call themselves, the humans) led to a series of mishaps. Alas, this culminated in their banishment to Hinoe Island, the so-called Isle of Demons. The ruling deity, Lady Kamuhitsuki, charged Sakuna with securing a foothold for the capital and rooting out the hordes of demonic beasts that plague the island. And, of course, as a goddess she must also look after the wayward children of men who were alongside her. But even a goddess needs to eat, and so the tale of rice and ruin begins... Sakuna may have begun her story as a spoiled princess, but over the course of her journey she will come into her own as the true successor to her exalted parents, Lady Toyohana the harvest goddess and Lord Takeribi the warrior god. As she explores the beautiful yet forbidding environments of Hinoe Island, she will also find a home in a mountain village, proving herself worthy of her title by harvesting rice and bettering the lives of humanity.
