Salamander is a side-scrolling shooter from Konami that lets one or two players take on waves of enemies across stages that move left to right and top to bottom. Released in 1986, it streamlines the Gradius formula by offering a more straightforward power-up system while keeping the fast-paced action. Players collect items to boost weapons and shields, surviving through increasingly chaotic boss fights and narrow corridors of fire. The game’s co-op mode lets teammates share screen space and tackle challenges together, a rarity at the time. What sticks out is how it balanced accessibility with intensity. While Gradius leaned on complex item management, Salamander’s simpler upgrades made it easier to pick up but still demanded precision. It was one of the first Konami titles to let two players team up, a feature that would become standard in later entries. Despite being a lesser-known entry in the franchise, its design choices helped shape the shooter genre’s approach to co-op and adaptive difficulty.
