Sansan is a digital adaptation of the ancient strategy game Go for the Sega Mega Drive. Played on a grid, players take turns placing stones to claim territory while blocking opponents. The 1994 release added online play via a modem, letting users connect over early internet lines to compete. A local two player mode is also included for offline matches. The system required a Sansan ID and compatible modem to join the service which operated in Japan at the time. The Mega Drive version is now one of the platform’s rarest titles. Few physical copies remain and no servers for the online feature are known to exist since 2011. The game wasn’t listed in official Sega Japan archives despite having a T-series code. A working ROM wasn’t discovered until 2011 adding to its mystery. While the PC version of the service still runs today the console edition exists only as a footnote in gaming history. Developed by White Box it remains a forgotten artifact of early 90s online play.
