Save Mary casts you as a construction worker operating a crane to rescue a trapped woman from a valley. Using a button press you lift crates and place them as stepping stones letting Mary climb upward. The mustachioed antagonist keeps her submerged at the bottom. Each level requires careful placement since water rising over her head or a misplaced crate ending her climb triggers a restart. Bonus items scattered through levels offer extra points but offer no reprieve from the relentless loop. The game lacks a final victory screen cycling back to level one after completing all stages. This endless reset paired with its 2005 release makes it a curious artifact of the Atari 2600’s later years. Development stretched over two years longer than any other title for the system according to historical records. Its simple mechanics and punishing difficulty create a rhythm that’s easy to dismiss yet oddly persistent. Players stuck in the valley’s cycle might find themselves wondering how long they’ve been stacking boxes in the dark.
