Secret Mission drops you into the chaos of 1950s Opalia, a fictional Asian kingdom caught in Cold War crossfire. You play Jeff, a disoriented double agent who wakes in a hotel after an ambush, tasked with uncovering a plot to assassinate the king. The game hinges on inventory management and logic puzzles, think codebreaking, lockpicking, and deciphering hidden messages. Keyboard-driven controls keep the focus on exploration and deduction, with voice acting and subtitles adding atmosphere. The game’s strength lies in its tense geopolitical setting and straightforward puzzle design. While some challenges feel familiar by adventure genre standards, the amnesia angle and shifting loyalties create a compelling mystery. A DOS and CD-i relic, it’s a niche pick for players who enjoy methodical storytelling over action. Its 1996 release date and Philips CD-i port make it a curiosity for retro gaming circles, though modern systems won’t run it without emulation.
Secret Mission plays in Opalia, a small kingdom in south-east Asia in the 1950s. Because of its geographical position the two superpowers, the USSR and the USA, are highly interested in the country. Their agents have destabilized the country, and local rebels, led by Prime Minister Vishaka, plan to assassinate the king. You play Jeff, a double agent, and when you arrive in Opalia, you are ambushed. You wake up in your hotel without remembering who you are and what you are doing here. Soon you learn who you are and what your mission is: to find evidence for the Minister's devious scheme. A complicated mission, as both countries are after his plan and both have their own motives.
