SegaSonic Popcorn Shop is an oddball arcade game where you operate a popcorn machine while fighting off mechanical threats. You select a flavor, crank the handle to cook the kernels, then swing the crank as a weapon to fend off Dr. Robotnik's robots. The game blends simple controls with repetitive tasks, turning a knob to pop corn and whacking enemies, as Sonic and Tails try to keep their snack stand running. The real-world machine dispenses actual popcorn once the round ends, tying gameplay to a physical reward. This Japan-only 1993 curiosity stands out for its gimmicky hardware and lighthearted chaos. While the combat feels more like flailing than fighting, the novelty of playing while a snack cooks gives it a strange charm. No modern ports or data tracks its popularity, but it remains a bizarre footnote in Sonic’s early career, part carnival attraction, part arcade game.
