About Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

FromSoftware dropped Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice on March 22, 2019. This action adventure title arrived on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. You play as Wolf, a shinobi orphan raised by Owl in a re-imagined late 16th century Sengoku period Japan. The story kicks off when warlord Isshin Ashina stages a bloody coup. Twenty years later, Genichiro captures the Divine Heir Kuro to steal his immortality. Your mission is to carve a path through this dark world and restore your honor. You wield deadly prosthetic tools while navigating feudal landscapes filled with larger than life foes. This single-player experience focuses on vertical traversal and visceral combat rather than traditional role-playing elements.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time deflecting enemy attacks with your katana instead of blocking or dodging. Timing is everything because a successful parry opens enemies up for devastating counterattacks. The game forces you to learn the rhythm of every boss fight before you can win. Stealth sections let you drop down on unaware foes for instant kills, but you cannot hide forever. You must climb walls and cross rooftops to reach hidden areas or ambush targets from above. Prosthetic tools change how you approach combat by allowing you to use smoke pellets or firecrackers. Each death sends you back to a sculptor's idol to revive, though you lose half your gold and experience points in the process. Mastering these mechanics requires patience and repeated attempts against relentless enemies.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile rate Sekiro highly with an IGDB score of 90.5 out of 100 based on 1279 ratings. The community vibes lean heavily toward Atmospheric, though some voters see it as Story-Driven or even Cooperative despite the single-player focus. Only 34 achievements exist in the game, and the average unlock rate sits at 35.1 percent. This low completion number suggests many players quit before finishing the main story or struggle with the hardest challenges. The rarest achievement is simply named Sekiro, unlocked by just 9.80 percent of users. Most reviewers mention the intense difficulty as a defining trait that separates this title from other FromSoftware releases. People appreciate the precision combat but admit the learning curve feels steep for newcomers to the genre.

PlayPile's Take

This game costs around 59 dollars on most platforms and demands your full attention if you want to see all 34 achievements. It suits players who enjoy punishing difficulty and precise timing over character building options. The story follows a clear linear path without branching endings, so do not expect high replayability based on narrative choices. Many people stop playing after failing the same boss for hours, which explains that low 9.80 percent completion rate for the final achievement. If you can handle constant failure and keep trying until you master the deflection system, this adventure offers a memorable challenge. Otherwise, the relentless combat might frustrate you enough to quit before reaching the credits.

Storyline

The game takes place in a re-imagined late 16th century Sengoku period Japan. At the end of the Sengoku era, warlord Isshin Ashina stages a bloody coup and seizes the land of Ashina. During this time, a nameless orphan is adopted by the wandering shinobi Owl, who names the orphan "Wolf". Twenty years later, the Ashina clan are on the brink of collapse due to a combination of the now elderly Isshin having fallen ill and the clan's enemies steadily closing in from all sides. Desperate to find a way to prevent the fall of his clan, Isshin's grandson Genichiro captures the Divine Heir Kuro, in hopes of using his "Dragon Heritage" to create an immortal army.
