"Backyard Soccer '98 is another success for the Backyard Sports franchise's revival. The charm of the series (both the original and this relaunch) lies with the players and their quirks. Everyone gets a moment to shine, which helps build a team into a fun strategy. League Play and Practice offer tons of variety in gameplay and player choice. However, the lack of tutorials feels off, considering that not as many American kids know about the sport as they do about football or basketball. Despite this missed opportunity, Backyard Soccer '98 is still an excellent time for any soccer fan who wants to jump back into their '90s nostalgia, or experience something new."

About

Sensible Soccer '98 is a soccer management and simulation game that updates the series’ signature arcade-style gameplay with a new 3D engine. Players control teams in matches or take on coaching duties, adjusting tactics between games. The roster includes preset World Cup tournaments, custom league creation, and three distinct arcade modes. Build squads from scratch or tweak existing teams to suit your playstyle. Matches emphasize fast passes and physical challenges, with simplified controls that prioritize action over realism. The game’s flexibility and nostalgic charm have kept it popular among retro sports fans. Community reviews highlight its deep customization and competitive multiplayer, which works smoothly over LAN. While the 3D visuals feel dated by modern standards, the responsive mechanics and World Cup focus make it a solid pick for quick matches. Over 20 years later, it still holds a 78% on Metacritic, with critics praising its balance of strategy and simplicity.
