Sewermania is a single-player arcade game released in 1983 for the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A. Players navigate a sewer system avoiding rats and a lurking alligator while searching for a hidden bomb. The generator in the upper left corner was originally supposed to flood the level temporarily with water to clear obstacles but was removed in the final version due to technical limitations. Gameplay focuses on quick reflexes and spatial awareness as you race against time and hazards. The game was developed by Milton Bradley’s Beverly Starke and programmer Dave Landon. It was a favorite of the company’s president at the time, though its design changed significantly during development. The TI-99/4A’s cartridge size forced cuts to features like the generator, a detail confirmed by Landon. The MBX add-on system added voice recognition and speech synthesis, with an easter egg: the system says “Dave, find the bomb” at the start, a nod to the programmer. Players with MBX hardware or speech modules experienced extra layers of interaction, making it a curious footnote in early 1980s gaming history.
