"Shadows of Adam is an enjoyable but familiar JRPG. It doesn't do anything overly surprising, but its fun combat mechanics and humorous writing largely overshadow a by-the-numbers story. It isn't overly challenging, but sometimes it's nice to step away from the grind and the random battles and take on something more leisurely. Those who long for the plethora of similar titles from the SNES days will find a better than average adventure here that outclasses many of the budget releases currently on the eShop."

About

Shadows of Cairn is a DOS-era action-adventure game where you play Quinn, an apprentice thief framed for murder. The gameplay splits between platforming, navigating traps, climbing walls, and dodging pitfalls, and combat, where you manually switch to Fight Mode to punch or kick enemies. Four difficulty settings range from Easy to Very Easy, which grants infinite health or invincibility but might leave you vulnerable to environmental hazards. The game’s structure keeps you on track with compass markers pointing to key locations, from taverns to towering city levels. What sets it apart is its straightforward design. A lack of inventory simplifies progression, though scattered chests hold healing items and quest-critical objects like a rat needed to trade for weapons. Animated cutscenes with voice acting break up the action, featuring a distinct art style reminiscent of early CD-ROM titles. While the linear path limits exploration, the mix of physics-based platforming and timed combat remains tight, especially on higher difficulties. Released in 1994, it’s a niche title that still holds up for fans of old-school action puzzles.

Storyline

The story of Shadows of Cairn revolves around Quinn, the apprentice thief, and his trials and tribulations. As stated, Quinn is an apprentice thief. Quinn has a problem, however, in that he is too honest to actually steal anything worth value and prove himself to his guild. As such, his guild master sets him up to take the fall for the murder of the Duke of Cairn.[3] After escaping from his holding cell, Quinn must fight and sneak his way through several areas of the tiered outpost city in the mountains of Cairn and prove his innocence and save the outpost from the greedy menace of his former master and associates.
