"Shanghai Summer had enough ingredients to be a memorable story but failed to do so. Sprites were pleasant at first glance but were not properly used, and the elements external to the main story end up being forgettable. Combine this with the game's bad grammar, lack of cohesion, and layout issues, and the final result is a bad structure that failed to suport the game's best element: the story."

About

Shanghai is a puzzle game where you clear tiles by finding matching pairs. The challenge comes from the layout each tile is covered unless you can remove the ones above it. You need to plan ahead since some matches might get blocked later. The Game Boy version keeps things straightforward with single player action and no distractions. The game's simplicity hides its trickiness. Early levels feel easy but later boards force you to think several moves ahead. Players note how it tests both memory and logic in a way that feels satisfying. With over 30 years since release it still shows how a well designed puzzle game can stay relevant. The portable format made it a hit for quick sessions between other tasks.
