Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is a classic role-playing game from Atlus that arrived on PS4, Switch, and PC in late 2020. This version brings the original Japanese console experience to modern screens without the extra content found in later expanded releases. That additional material exists as optional DLC for specific regions. The story drops you into a ruined Tokyo after an event called the Conception wipes out humanity and reshapes reality. You play as a high school student who wakes up reborn as a demon alongside two classmates. Your mission involves surviving this hostile netherworld where folklore monsters roam freely while various factions fight to impose their own vision of order or chaos on the new world.
You navigate a dark, atmospheric Tokyo filled with demons using standard RPG controls. Combat happens in real-time encounters that shift into turn-based strategy when you engage enemies. The core loop involves exploring dungeons, fighting waves of creatures, and negotiating with them to join your party. You spend most of your time managing a menu system to recruit new demons, fuse their abilities together, and equip gear. Every session feels like a tactical puzzle where your choices in battle dictate which allies you can add later. The game does not hold your hand as you make decisions that affect the story's direction or the ending you receive. You will spend hours grinding levels and experimenting with different demon combinations to survive the toughest areas.
PlayPile data shows this title holds strong favor among fans despite its age. The community gives it an average score of 85.4 out of 100 based on 24 user ratings on IGDB, while Metacritic sits at 77. Players report an average playtime of roughly 35 hours for a standard run. Completion rates suggest many finish the main story but struggle with the complex fusion system required for full mastery. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgic appreciation and frustration with difficulty spikes. Review snippets frequently mention the game's challenging nature and unique aesthetic as defining traits. Critics on our platform note that while the graphics hold up well, the clunky UI from the original release remains a point of contention for new players trying to learn the ropes.
This game is worth playing if you enjoy difficult turn-based strategy and deep narrative choices. The HD Remaster offers a solid presentation on PC and consoles without unnecessary bloat. You get 100% of the original Japanese experience with optional DLC for extra content. Achievement hunters will find plenty to do, especially in unlocking all demon fusions. At its current price point, it delivers hundreds of hours of gameplay for those willing to read every text box. It is not an easy entry point for casual gamers but serves as a benchmark for the genre. Buy this if you want a challenging RPG with a distinct voice rather than a polished modern equivalent.
The world has been swallowed by chaos. As a demonic revolution descends into a broken Tokyo, the choices you make will determine if it stays that way. Tokyo, 200X. A young high schooler spends his days blissfully unaware of the chaos about to befall his world. The rebirth of the world, an event which no human has ever witnessed takes place and wipes the world’s slate clean. Chaos itself enfolds Japan's capital, and what was once a bustling center of life is now a ruined hellscape, where demons from folklore gather. Sucked into this hostile netherworld are our young protagonist and his two classmates, who are separated at different points on the compass. While our protagonist is unconscious, two curious figures endow him with a Magatama, and hence the power to survive this harsh tribulation. Be it a blessing or a curse, he awakens to find himself reborn as a demon. And so begins his journey through a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where new enemies and old friends carve a bloody path toward their visions of an ideal world...
