Shogun Warriors is a 2D fighting game from the early 90s that lets you punch, kick, and grapple your way through a single-player tournament. You pick a warrior and face randomly chosen opponents, with the final four bosses always appearing in a fixed order. Controls use an 8-way joystick and four buttons for light and heavy attacks. Matches are best of three, and the arcade mode pits you against the CPU or another player. Certain attacks from sword-wielding characters can make opponents bleed, a feature that hit arcades months before similar effects became famous elsewhere. The game’s standout is its grab mechanic. When locked in a grapple, the attacker shakes the joystick left and right to tighten their hold while the defender mashes buttons to break free. This adds a layer of timing and pressure to close combat. Though overshadowed by later fighters, Shogun Warriors carved a niche with its roughhouse grappling and early gore. It remains a curiosity for fighters fans who dig obscure 90s brawls.
