Shootout! is a two player shooter for the Magnavox Odyssey. One player controls a bandit moving along a path in an Old West town. The opponent uses a light gun to take aim at windows where the bandit pauses. Each shot must land before the target moves on. The game relies on quick reflexes and steady hands. Players swap roles to keep the action balanced. Released late in 1972 this title comes from one of the earliest attempts at interactive home gaming. It’s part of the Shooting Gallery set that showed off the Odyssey’s light gun capabilities. Despite its simple design it captures the same thrill of timing and precision that still works in modern shooters. A relic from the dawn of video games that still holds up for quick bursts of competitive fun.
