Side Pocket is a 1986 arcade game where players take turns sinking numbered balls into pockets using a pool cue. The core loop involves lining up shots, adjusting power and angle, and aiming for strategic clears. Single-player matches pit you against computer opponents while local multiplayer lets friends compete on the same table. Controls are straightforward with a joystick and buttons for aiming and shooting. The game emphasizes quick reflexes and basic pool logic without complex physics. Despite its simplicity, the game found enough traction to spawn home console ports and two sequels. It also accidentally launched a spin-off series called Pocket Gal, which shifted focus to character customization. Data East’s original version remains a footnote in arcade history, with G-Mode now holding the IP. While not a technical marvel, its straightforward gameplay and dual-player support made it a brief hit in the mid-80s arcade scene.
