About

Simulcra is a 1990 third-person shooter from Graftgold that lets you pilot a vehicle capable of switching between ground and air combat. Play on the Amiga or Atari ST as you navigate a wireframe world, slicing through 30 matrices by destroying energy projectors. Your SRV handles both terrain and sky, with a camera locked behind you as you weave through shifting pathways. The goal is simple: cut Simulcra’s power to halt its real-world weapon production. The game stands out for its fluid control scheme and evolving environments. Each matrix throws waves of enemies at you, from turrets to aircraft, while destroying them drops upgrade pods for better weapons and health. A full map aids planning, though challenge comes from precise movement and timing. RetroGamer rated it 78% on Amiga and 79% on Atari ST, praising its ahead-of-its-time 3D feel. The blend of strategy and action holds up as a niche gem for retro fans.

Storyline

The Simulcra unit was thought to be the last best hope for peace. International disputes could be battled out in a simulated environment, in a world with no real guns or bombs. Unfortunately, the system malfunctioned and began generating real weapons and tanks to attack the outside world. You are the man charged with putting a stop to all of this. In your ground-skimming SRV, remove the power lines that keep Simulcra functional. Shoot out each of the energy projectors which block your path to clear each of the 30 matrices. The action is viewed from immediately behind you, showing a world of pathways and gaps which rotate as you move your craft, which can also reverse. You will have to fight off guns, planes and everything else the embattled system can throw at you. Destroying these releases pods which give extras such as improved weaponry and extra energy when collected. A full map of the area is provided.
