"Sniper Elite 4 is the best entry yet in this long-running franchise with great big meaty missions stuffed to bursting point with Nazis to snipe and stab in glorious slo-mo X-ray vision. There's a new-found flexibility to the gameplay, with Karl now able to shimmy and scurry vertically around levels and enemy AI that's much more up to the task than in previous iterations. There may be some slightly rough edges, with duff writing, naff characters and gameplay that doesn't change much from start to finish but, overall, this is playful sniper's paradise that lands on Switch in a truly impressive port. It's time to dust off that M1903 Springfield, find a nice vantage point and get to blowing great big bloody holes in fascist heads. The perfect antidote to 2020."

About Sniper Elite 4

Sniper Elite 4 drops you into World War Two Italy as elite marksman Karl Fairburne. Released in February 2017 by Rebellion Developments, this title brings tactical shooting to a massive peninsula filled with coastal towns, forests, and mountain monasteries. You play as part of the Italian Resistance fighting Fascism while thwarting a new German threat before D-Day even happens. The game launched on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and later expanded to Switch, Mac, iOS, and Stadia. It offers single player campaigns alongside co-op and multiplayer modes. The story keeps the pressure high since failure means no Allied invasion of Europe.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time scanning distant targets through a scope while managing wind, bullet drop, and terrain. Each mission lets you approach objectives however you see fit using stealth takedowns or long-range eliminations. You can cross open areas without triggering alarms if you move quietly. The game tracks kills with X-ray cutscenes that show exactly how your bullet impacted the enemy skeleton. Co-op allows a second player to join for shared missions or competitive multiplayer modes. Controls feel tight when aiming, and the physics engine handles realistic ballistics without feeling overly arcade-like. Sessions often involve hours of planning and execution rather than constant running and gunning.

What Players Think

Critics gave this title solid marks with OpenCritic rating it 78 out of 100 while 71.76 percent of reviewers recommended it. IGDB shows a score of 75 based on 196 user ratings. Players describe the vibe as creepy with only one vote recorded in that category so far. PC Gamer called it a hearty improvement over the third entry and praised its freeform play style. IGN noted that the mechanics actually support the promise of playing your own way rather than just saying it. The achievement system contains 85 total unlocks with an average completion rate of just 13.1 percent. "The Collector" remains the rarest challenge at only a 1.00 percent unlock rate among players who have tried it.

PlayPile's Take

Sniper Elite 4 is worth buying if you enjoy slow-paced tactical shooters set in historical settings. The lowest price found recently sits at $4.79 on Fanatical, making it an accessible entry point for new players. It delivers exactly what it promises with robust mission design and satisfying ballistic physics. You should expect to spend time mastering wind calculations and patience rather than reflexes. This title is not for people who want fast-paced action or linear corridors. The achievement grind might frustrate completionists since only 13.1 percent of players have unlocked everything. If you like shooting from a distance in a convincing World War Two setting, this game hits the mark.
