"Physics based games are never my strong point, but I always like to give them a go to see if there’s one that will break the cycle for me and allow me to get better at them. Unfortunately Solar Flux offers very little in terms of complexity or excitement. Once I beat the game for review purposes I never went back to it, and there’s just too much available right now on Switch to really consider why I would want too."

Solar Fox is a 1981 shooter where you control a ship in the center of the screen fending off enemies approaching from all four sides. Your goal is to destroy incoming ships and avoid collisions with "Fuzors" while managing waves that grow faster and more chaotic. The simple controls let you move and fire in real time but the tight spacing and relentless pressure make it a test of reflexes. Both single player and two-player co-op modes let you focus on survival or compete for high scores. The game’s unforgiving difficulty and multi-directional action have kept it in the memories of retro gaming fans. With its straightforward mechanics and escalating tension Solar Fox remains a short but intense experience. Though not as visually detailed as later shooters it holds up as a solid example of early arcade design. The availability on Commodore 64 and Atari 2600 helped extend its reach beyond arcades making it one of Midway’s more accessible early titles.
