Solar Quest is a 1981 arcade shooter where you pilot a spaceship through a screen wrapped by gravity. Rotate left or right, thrust forward, and dodge hazards while battling waves of up to eight enemy ships. The sun at screen center acts like a cosmic vacuum, pulling debris and ships toward it. Seven enemy types grow smaller as the game progresses, making them trickier targets. You fire a limited stream of cannon shots or unleash nukes, each requiring a second button press to detonate. Collect downed enemies as drifting survivors to earn points and respawns, or let them spiral into the sun. The game’s charm lies in its tight mechanics and clever use of physics. The sun’s pull adds a layer of unpredictability, forcing you to manage position as much as ammo. A two-player mode pits friends against the waves, while Simon Burns of VoxelArcade praised its “freedom under an overlaid blue sky.” Though lesser known than Asteroids, Solar Quest holds a cult following for its balanced challenge and inventive fusion of space combat and vector graphics.
