Soldiers of Heaven VR casts you as a journalist embedded with a US Army unit deployed in Iraq. Your tool isn’t a weapon but a virtual camera, letting you capture events in a 3D environment as the squad confronts a radical religious group. The gameplay revolves around documenting the action from your perspective, with limited control over where you look or what you record. The narrative unfolds in short bursts, blending combat footage with tense moments of observation. Set in a gritty, low-poly world, the experience prioritizes perspective over interactivity, forcing you to piece together events through the lens. Inspired by a real but obscure conflict involving hundreds of casualties, the game leans into its unsettling premise. While the story’s brevity and presentation may divide players, the act of framing events through a camera creates a distancing yet complicit viewpoint. Its 2016 release on SteamVR feels dated in some mechanics, but the central concept of passive documentation in war zones lingers. Community discussions often focus on the ethical gray areas of its approach, with some praising its bold framing and others finding it too detached.
You are an embedded journalist travelling with a small US Army special forces team as they battle "The Soldiers of Heaven" - a religious cult in Iraq that tried to start a Muslim Armageddon during the Ashura festival. This battle with the SOH ended with over 300 deaths : men, women and children. This project is based on a true story that was covered up... and now you have a chance to try and find the truth. Armed with a virtual camera you will film your own version of the story as it unfolds in an immersive 3D world. In this build you can watch a preview in game.
