Son Son II is a 1989 platformer from Capcom that trades the first game's shoot-'em-up mechanics for side-scrolling jumps and brawls. You'll wield an extendable staff to smash enemies, collect coins for health and upgrades, and hunt for keys needed to fight stage bosses. The story has you rescuing three companions kidnapped by a shadowy figure, with each level blending action and puzzle elements to progress. The game’s standout features include its early use of Zenny, the currency later seen in classic Capcom titles, and the key-hunt mechanic that forces careful level exploration. It borrows heavily from Wonder Boy and Capcom’s Black Tiger, with fluid animation and precise controls that feel dated but deliberate. Released only in Japan on the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine, it’s a forgotten title from the company’s early platforming experiments.
