"Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal attempts to inject puzzle-solving and heavy exploration into the classic Sonic formula, and the result is a mess of gameplay styles that never feel comfortable with each other. Running one minute and clumsily searching for required hidden items the next is awkward and unrewarding, and being forced to retread the same level several times before unlocking the next is a bore. With a heaping helping of poorly written and unskippable cutscenes, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is a slog that never finds its footing."

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal follows Sonic and his crew as they search for a powerful relic on a secluded island. Amy’s discovery of an ancient script draws the attention of Lyric, a villain determined to harness its energy. To stop him, Sonic teams up with Tails, Knuckles, and Sticks the Badger, navigating treacherous terrain filled with traps and mechanical enemies. The game leans into classic platforming mechanics with 3D levels that use the 3DS’s hardware, plus optional co-op sections for splitting objectives. The title earned praise for its colorful visuals and tight controls but faced some criticism for repetitive enemy designs and a shorter campaign. Its focus on teamwork shines brightest in puzzle sections where characters’ abilities complement each other. While not the most ambitious entry in the series, it delivers a polished, if familiar, adventure that fans of the 3D platformer genre will appreciate.
