Sonic Speedway is a small-screen racing game released with McDonald's Happy Meals in late 2003. Played on a handheld LCD device with two directional buttons, it tasks you with steering Sonic’s racecar through a series of three-lane courses. One lane remains free at all times while the others are blocked by oncoming cars. Dodging each row adds a point to your score, with speed and difficulty rising every 30 points across four stages. The challenge comes from tight timing, crash five times in a level and it’s game over. The game’s charm lies in its simplicity and accessibility. With no complex mechanics or menus, it’s pure reflex-based action designed for quick bursts of play. Its physical distribution as a toy made it a nostalgic grab-and-go treat for kids at the time. Though its lifespan was short and its tech rudimentary, Sonic Speedway carved a niche as a memorable example of branded portable gaming. The straightforward design and escalating tension still hold up for fans of no-frills arcade challenges.
