Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a side-scrolling platformer where you control Sonic to rescue his friend Tails from Dr. Robotnik. The game tasks you with collecting six Chaos Emeralds and delivering them to robot guardians to secure Tails’ freedom. Each of the seven zones has three acts filled with running, jumping, and combat. Sonic can smash through walls, retrieve scattered rings, and use tools like a mine cart or hang glider. The Game Gear and Master System versions feature simpler graphics than later entries but retain the series’ fast-paced action and level variety. This 1992 release introduced Tails as a recurring character, a move that fans still celebrate as a key moment in the franchise. While shorter and less complex than the Genesis sequel, it offers a pure platforming experience with tight controls and memorable zones. Retro players appreciate its role in Sonic’s early history and the chance to see Tails’ debut. The game remains a nostalgic pick for those who enjoy classic 8-bit platformers.
South Island has been peaceful since Dr. Robotnik's defeat. Sonic, bored, decides to go on a journey in search of other adventures. Upon his return, he is shocked to find the island nearly abandoned. The only clue as to where all his friends might have disappeared to was Tails being chased by Dr. Robotnik. Sonic chases after him, but he is too late to save Tails. Sonic finds out that he's been kidnapped by Dr. Robotnik and is being held in a place called Crystal Egg. The price for Tails' safe return are the 6 Chaos Emeralds, to be delivered to 6 new boss robots. Thus, Sonic goes on a quest to find the Chaos Emeralds and rescue Tails.
