Soul & Sword is a 1993 Super Famicom RPG from Pandora Box that leans into non-linear storytelling. You tackle quests in any order though some need completion before others. Most tasks are optional but shift the ending based on your choices. Miss a quest you can come back later no penalties for dropping and picking up threads. The world reacts to your pace but character stats stay fixed even as time moves forward. What lingers is the time system that ages characters visually while their abilities stay locked. This same system tracks loans you take out with cash penalties if unpaid by year’s end. As a prequel to cross Starlight & Prairie it builds a world where decisions ripple but rarely reshape core strength. Limited to Japan at launch its design feels ahead of its time in letting players shape stories without rigid paths.
