About SoulCalibur

SoulCalibur dropped in arcades on July 30, 1998 before hitting the Dreamcast in 1999. Project Soul made it for Namco as the sequel to Soul Edge. This weapon-based 3D fighter uses the System 12 hardware and later ran on Xbox 360, Android, iOS, and Dreamcast systems. The game swaps standard punches for swords, spears, and axes in a tournament setting. Players control characters like Siegfried or Sophitia while hunting the cursed Soul Edge blade. It launched as a key title for the North American Dreamcast release in September 1999. The story follows warriors trying to stop Nightmare from claiming more souls after his possession by the evil sword.

Gameplay

You fight using an eight-way movement system that lets you circle opponents freely instead of sticking to a lane. Matches rely on timing weapon swings, blocking with shields, and managing distance against characters wielding different armaments. A typical session involves selecting your fighter, navigating stages, and engaging in one-on-one bouts where parries can deflect heavy attacks. The game offers single-player modes to fight through the story or defeat CPU opponents. Multiplayer lets you compete locally or online against other fighters. Controls feel responsive with a focus on reading enemy patterns rather than just button mashing. You must master specific weapon ranges since a sword needs more space than a spear.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows IGDB rated this title 71.9 out of 100 based on 126 user ratings. The community mood leans heavily toward nostalgic appreciation for its technical achievements on the Dreamcast. Average playtime hovers around 14 hours for main story completion, though competitive players spend hundreds more in versus mode. Review snippets frequently mention the weapon mechanics as a standout feature that changed the genre forever. Completion rates suggest most users finish the single-player campaign without much trouble but find higher difficulty spikes in later rounds. Critics often cite it as one of the top five fighting games ever made, with high marks for its visual fidelity at launch.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth playing if you want to understand how 3D fighting evolved during the late 90s. The price varies by platform but remains accessible on modern consoles and mobile devices. There are no achievement trackers listed in current databases, which makes tracking progress purely manual. Siegfried's transformation into Nightmare drives a compelling narrative that sets up future entries in the series. You will find tight combat mechanics and unique weapon handling that still holds up today. Avoid this if you only prefer traditional 2D fighters with limited movement options. It stands as a definitive Dreamcast experience regardless of platform availability.

Storyline

The mystical sword of the legends, the "Soul Edge", ended up in the hands of the dreaded pirate Cervantes de Leon of Spain. For the next 25 years, he stayed dormant on the remnants of a Spanish port town, taking the souls of those who reached him during their search of the sword. His reign of terror was soon to start, but through the joined efforts of Greek divine warrior Sophitia Alexandra and Japanese ninja Taki, he was stopped and killed, with one of the twin Soul Edge blades being shattered in the process. As it was about to tear itself apart, young Prussian knight Siegfried Schtauffen approached the port town and battled Cervantes, whose corpse had been momentarily reanimated through Soul Edge's will. After emerging victorious, Siegfried's attention turned unto the sword. The moment he took the hilt of the cursed blade, Soul Edge released a bright column of light into the sky. This was known as the "Evil Seed", bound to bring calamity and death in its wake. Three years after those events, Soul Edge uses Siegfried as its host, and now Siegfried is Nightmare, a knight wearing azure armor and sporting a hideously deformed right arm. Europe plunges into a vortex of slaughters as he and his followers claim souls to strengthen the blade in its weakened state. Unknown to them, a group of warriors met on their journey to stop Soul Edge, and with them, three sacred weapons join once again.
