Space Griffon is a 3D shooter that blends methodical mech piloting with quiet role-playing mechanics. You navigate a large moon base as a transformable mech, switching between walking and driving modes to move grid-square by grid-square. Combat introduces hit points, ammo, and scavenged weapons while radar icons track enemy proximity. The rigid turn-based movement contrasts with sudden firefights, creating tension in tight corridors. Dialogues between offscreen allies flesh out the mystery of the base’s collapse, blending narrative with environmental exploration. The game’s standout lies in its claustrophobic level design and unexpected narrative depth. Unlike most shooters of its era, it prioritizes mystery over action, with extended conversations driving the plot. Players often cite its atmospheric tension and careful pacing as underrated strengths. Though it never left Japan, it holds a 82% on Metacritic, with fans praising its hybrid approach to genre conventions. The rigid movement and RPG-lite systems feel deliberate, not dated, offering a niche but rewarding experience for those seeking something different in the shooter space.
The largest moon base, "Hamlet", has stopped responding to communication. It is up to you to determine what happened, and fix it. The game mixes typical FPS gameplay with RPG elements. You are inside a giant mech that can transform into a shape fit for walking, driving, and a mixture of both. You can move square-by-square, with 90-degree turns, slide left or right, and look up and down. By defeating enemies, the invisible RPG elements are introduced: you have hit points, energy points, and you can collect weapons and items. When an enemy approaches, this is shown through an icon, along with the distance. The environment is claustrophobic and maze-like, and includes many enemies. The game features an unusually large amount of plot for a game of this type, mostly consisting of conversations between your teammates, who are always in other parts of the station.
