About

Space Wars lets two players battle in a physics-heavy shoot-'em-up rooted in 1970s computer science. Based on an experimental space combat game from MIT, it uses vector graphics to render ships, bullets, and a central star that warps movement with gravity. Each player controls a ship with buttons for rotation, thrust, shooting, and a teleport-like "hyperspace" escape. The playfield can be customized to wrap around edges or include a star that either pulls you in or pushes you away. Hits don’t instantly destroy ships, they shed metal scraps and slow down as damage piles up, creating a tense, escalating fight. What makes Space Wars stand out is its mechanical quirks and grindhouse economics. The game demands a human opponent, which was rare for arcade titles at the time. Damaged ships move clumsily, adding layers to the combat. But the most iconic feature is its timekeeping, each quarter buys 90 seconds of play, turning matches into budgeting challenges. Players could theoretically team up for a $10 “endless” session, though most likely just tried to one-up each other. A cult classic among retro arcade nerds, it’s a stripped-down but clever test of reflexes and strategy.
