Space Zap drops you in a retro shooter where you guard a central base against waves of enemies attacking from all four directions. Using a simple but responsive laser, you blast invaders as they approach from the top, bottom, and sides, each wave getting faster and more chaotic. The single-player mode pits you against relentless AI, while the two-player option lets a buddy join in to split the workload or add another layer of friendly competition. Quick to learn but tough to master, it's a raw, twitchy experience that leans into the arcade era's love of high difficulty and instant restarts. What sticks out is how tightly it focuses on pure reflexes over power-ups or complex systems. Without frills or fluff, it’s a stripped-down test of your ability to track multiple threats at once. Though it only made a brief appearance on the Bally Astrocade and arcade cabinets, retro players still point to its dual-player mode as a surprise standout for the time. The lack of slowdown even at maximum chaos hasn't aged a day off.
