About

Sparta: War of Empires is a strategy game where you build and command a Greek city-state during the 5th century BC. As Archon, you manage Bronze, Grain, and Timber to expand your settlement, train soldiers, and fortify defenses. The goal is to unite Greek cities against Xerxes’ Persian invasion by forming alliances, negotiating treaties, and leading mixed armies into battle. Each decision impacts your resources and military strength, requiring careful planning to outmaneuver rivals and invaders. The game stands out for its blend of city-building, diplomacy, and tactical combat. Managing three core resources adds a layer of strategy as you balance economic growth with military needs. Alliances let you unlock unique units and construction options, creating diverse playstyles. While the historical setting and focus on coalition-building offer depth, the mechanics feel familiar to fans of older strategy titles. Released in late 2014, it leans into classic empire-building tropes with a Greek twist.

Storyline

Set in the 5th century BC, the ancient world of Greece is in turmoil, under threat from Xerxes and his giant Persian Empire. This is a world where politics and diplomacy prove as sharp as the blades of combat. Few men have dared to rise against Xerxes and his invading armies. The people need a hero – someone to stand up and unite Greece in the battle against his empire. With guidance from King Leonidas and help from his Spartan army, you will hone your abilities as a strategist, diplomat and a leader, while you build an army unrivalled by even that of Xerxes. Your City will be your source of wealth and Resources, the heart of your Army, and the central point of your ever-growing domain. Your job as Archon is to build and command your army, grow your City, and protect it from the Persian threat. Signing agreements with other Cities will allow you to train new types of Units, gain abilities, and even construct new buildings. If you wish to come out on top in the battle against Xerxes, you must learn to manage the three main Resources - Bronze, Grain and Timber. These will help provide the people of your City – and the warriors in your army – with everything they need to survive and grow.
