"Spectrum is a minimalistic platformer which really tests your patience with it’s more advanced Dark World levels. The simplistic nature of the game makes this a great game to pick up and play in short bursts, but there is also enough content for longer play sessions as well. The addition of a two-player time-attack mode was fun, but it doesn’t deviate from the core mechanic of the main game or offer anything new other than declaring who’s the fastest between the two players. However, based on the current price point and how much time Spectrum entertained us, I wouldn’t have any issues recommending this to casual gamers or those looking for a simple game they can just pick up and play."

About

Specimen 134 follows Jason, a teenager who starts spotting oddities in his sleepy town. When his friend David suggests a hike into the woods, curiosity gets the better of him. The Game Boy Color title unfolds as a point-and-click mystery where players piece together clues about strange occurrences and a shadowy lab project. Simple controls and pixelated visuals keep the focus on the eerie narrative, which slowly reveals layers of conspiracy and body horror. The game leans into its handheld format with tense, low-fi atmosphere. While the story twists aren't impressive, the slow drip of unease and cryptic dialogue make it memorable for retro horror fans. Developer Ben Jelter crafts a concise experience that lingers longer than its 4-hour runtime suggests. October 2024 brings this niche curiosity to those who miss 90s-era mystery games with a hint of gross-out sci-fi.
