Spectar is a fast-paced arcade shooter that builds on its 1980 predecessor Targ. You pilot a vehicle called Whummel through a 9x9 maze, dodging enemy fire and chasing foes. The catch? Completing a level requires collecting all gems scattered in the grid, adding a Pac-Man style objective. Enemies like Rammers and Spectars spawn from glowing pods, forcing constant movement. Play alone or swap turns with another player using simple controls, stick for direction, button for shooting. The maze now includes destructible barricades that offer temporary cover, plus ten distinct environments like forests and lunar landscapes. Enemies are faster and more aggressive, with new patterns that ramp up tension. While the gameplay loops feel familiar, the added urgency of gathering gems under relentless pressure makes each round feel chaotic. Though it shares DNA with older classics, the tighter pacing and varied settings keep it from feeling like a carbon copy.
