Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe is a chaotic futuristic sport game where two teams battle to score goals on a brutalist steel arena. Players maneuver through bounce domes and warp tunnels that teleport the ball across the field, adding unpredictable twists to every play. The action unfolds in a gridlocked mix of strategy and reflexes as teams jostle for control. Launched in 1990, it brought sharper VGA graphics and digitized sound to the sequel, making it one of the first games to blend arcade intensity with tactical depth. The game’s over-the-top violence and anarchic tone stand out, fueled by a story where corruption buried the original league and a rogue team resurfaces to reclaim the spotlight. With modes for solo matches or head-to-head clashes, it leans into its grimy, high-energy vibe that still feels oddly fresh. Its presence on oddball platforms like Game Boy and BlackBerry hints at a cult following that kept it kicking decades after release.
According to the game's story, the first Speedball league (founded in 2095) fails due to violence and corruption. As the organisation gives place to anarchy the game is forced underground, but five years later, in an attempt to regain public interest, Speedball 2 is born. The game starts in 2105 with the emergence of a new team, Brutal Deluxe.
