About Spider-Man 2

Released on June 28, 2004 by Treyarch for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube, Spider-Man 2 adapts the blockbuster movie into a third-person action title. You play as Peter Parker swinging through a massive Manhattan that includes Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island. The game blends adventure with beat 'em up combat across nineteen levels. It stands out by using physics-based algorithms to simulate web swinging rather than simple jumping or flying animations found in previous entries. This setup lets you tackle classic Marvel villains like Doc Ock, Vulture, and Rhino while exploring the largest superhero city ever built at that time.

Gameplay

You move through New York City on foot or by web swinging, which feels distinct because of its 3D physics simulation. Missions break into chapters where you complete linear story objectives or hunt down side tasks given by random pedestrians. These chores involve punching speeding cars, saving construction workers from falls, or delivering injured people to hospitals. Combat requires timing your attacks and dodges carefully while using Spider-Sense to slow time against gunfire. You can chain combo moves to defeat enemies like Shocker or Rhino. After finishing the main campaign, a bonus warehouse mode unlocks where you face waves of foes and exclusive bosses such as Calypso.

What Players Think

Players on IGDB have rated this title 72.4 out of 100 based on 261 ratings, showing a solid reception that leans positive but not flawless. The community appreciates the expanded map beyond the film's runtime and the physics-driven movement system that defined the genre back then. Average playtime suggests a solid chunk of content given the nineteen levels and unlockable bonus mode. Critics from that era noted the depth of gameplay as a major selling point, especially how it handled web swinging mechanics compared to earlier games. While some found the combat demanding due to its timing requirements, the sheer scale of Manhattan remains a key talking point among fans who value open-world exploration in superhero titles.

PlayPile's Take

Spider-Man 2 is worth playing if you want deep combat and massive city traversal from the PS2 era. The price on secondary markets makes it accessible for collectors or retro enthusiasts looking for a specific type of action game. You get nineteen story levels plus a challenging bonus mode with Calypso after beating the campaign. This title fits fans who enjoyed physics-based movement systems in 2004 rather than modern open-world structures. It lacks the polish of current releases but delivers a dense experience that few games matched at the time. Buy it for the legacy mechanics and the sheer size of its Manhattan map.

Storyline

The console version of Spider-Man 2 is a third-person action-adventure video game, set in an open world based on New York City and composed of Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island. Players take on the role of Spider-Man and complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story. The story is divided into multiple chapters, each with its own set of objectives, such as purchasing upgrades for Spider-Man, or acquiring a certain number of hero points from completing side missions. These side missions are given by random pedestrians across the game's map, and mainly consist of battling criminals, stopping speeding cars by jumping on top of them and punching them, taking injured people to the hospital, or saving construction workers from falling to their deaths. Each chapter includes at least one story mission related to the main plot. Players are able to web swing, crawl walls, and fight enemies using a variety of combos. They can use Spider-Man's "spider sense" to slow down time and dodge incoming attacks, including gun fire. This version of the game was considered innovative at that time due to its physics-based algorithms that simulate Spider-Man's web swinging in three dimensions, creating a new game mechanic unlike the traditional jumping or flying of previous Spider-Man games. Combat is far more complex, as it involves carefully timing the player's attacks and dodges. After completing the main storyline, a bonus mode inside a warehouse is unlocked, where the player can fight waves of enemies and bosses from the main storyline, as well as an exclusive villain: Calypso.
