Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.2 dropped this shooter on Wii U back in May 2015. It centers on Inklings, a species that toggles between human and squid forms. The core hook involves covering territory with colorful ink rather than just eliminating opponents. You play as Agent 3 in a single-player quest to recover the Great Zapfish from Octarians. Eight players can join for multiplayer battles, but the campaign offers a distinct narrative experience. This title stands out because movement relies heavily on swimming through your own paint to reload ammo or hide from enemies.
You spend most of your time spraying ink to claim ground while avoiding the enemy's color. Switching to squid mode lets you sprint across walls and floors, which changes how you navigate the map entirely. A typical session involves balancing territory control with aggressive offense against opposing teams. The controls feel tight because movement speed depends on whether you are walking or swimming. You must constantly monitor your ink levels since running out leaves you defenseless. The single-player mode adds variety with specific objectives like collecting Sunken Scrolls and Power Eggs in Octo Valley. Matches end when the timer runs out, rewarding the team that covers more floor space.
Critics and players have been consistent about this title's quality. Metacritic holds a score of 81 out of 100 while IGDB sits at 81.1 based on 160 ratings. The community vibe leans heavily toward playful competition rather than pure aggression. Average playtime suggests many users spend significant hours grinding through the campaign before jumping online. Completion rates for the main story are high, though the multiplayer side sees more varied engagement depending on server populations. Review snippets frequently mention the satisfaction of reclaiming territory. No other site tracks how long players actually stick with the single-player mode versus multiplayer lobbies.
This game costs money and delivers 80 to 90 hours of content if you count all modes fully. It is worth buying for anyone who likes shooters that prioritize movement over raw aim. The achievement list tracks your progress through Octo Valley and multiplayer ranks. You will not find a better party game on Wii U right now. Skip this if you hate team coordination or need fast-paced gunfights without the ink mechanic. Play it to see how territory control changes the genre completely.
After the Great Zapfish, Inkopolis' primary power supply, is stolen, Cap'n Cuttlefish employs a Splatoon of Inklings to travel to the Octarians' secret underground base and retrieve it. Players assume the role of Agent 3 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and traverse the treacherous landscape of Octo Valley in order to reclaim various lost Zapfish, Sunken Scrolls, and Power Eggs.
