Star Parodier is a vertical shooter that flips the serious tone of its inspirations with goofy charm. You pilot one of three bizarre ships, like a flying Bomberman or a PC Engine that fires discs at foes, through waves of enemies. Progress relies on collecting power-ups, battling bosses, and surviving relentless firefights. Two time attack modes challenge you to beat high scores in 2 or 5 minute sprints. The game’s humor shines in details like enemies surrendering with white flags and weapon upgrades that feel more cartoonish than deadly. The standout here is its lighthearted parody of sci-fi shooters. While rooted in the Star Soldier formula, it replaces intensity with absurdity, from its pixelated ships to the oddly specific character choices. Released only in Japan in 1992, it almost made it to North America as Fantasy Star Soldier but never left the region. Fans of retro shooters with a quirky twist might find it buried on Wii or Turbografx-16/PC Engine CD platforms. Its cult status is easy to see, this one’s a weird, fun throwback.
