Star Wars: X-Wing drops you in the cockpit of a Rebel Alliance starfighter during the early days of the Galactic Civil War. As a pilot, you tackle missions ranging from dogfights to bombing runs, all set against the events leading up to the Battle of Yavin. The game unfolds across three distinct campaigns with 12 to 14 missions each, blending tactical combat with narrative moments. Between missions, you’ll read briefings and watch cutscenes that build the story, while in-flight messages add context during fights. The experience leans heavily into sim mechanics, letting you manage shields, weapons, and flight maneuvers with precision. This 1993 title earned a dedicated following for its depth and commitment to Star Wars lore. With its mix of tight controls and mission variety, it’s often cited as a landmark in flight sim design. Retro players praise its balance of challenge and storytelling, and the optional novella that came with some editions expanded the world without gating gameplay. Over 30 years later, it remains a touchstone for fans of old-school space combat.
Players assume the role of a Rebel pilot fighting the Galactic Empire before and during the climactic battle of the first Star Wars film. The story consists of three tours of duty of 12 to 14 operations each; although the tours can be played out of order, operations within each tour are played linearly. Briefings, cutscenes, and in-flight messages advance the plot. Additionally, a limited edition of the game came packaged with a 96-page novella, The Farlander Papers by Rusel DeMaria, that provides story information. The novella, later made part of Prima Publishing's strategy guide, presents a pilot name Keyan Farlander as the player's character for most of the operations.[2]
