Starmaster is a 1982 arcade shooter from Activision that pits you in a starfighter against waves of enemy ships threatening allied bases. Played from a first-person cockpit view, the game emphasizes energy management over pure action. You control a vessel with lasers, shields, and warp drive but limited power reserves. Firing, taking damage, or even flying drains your energy. Run out and you’re dead. Enemies can also disable your weapons mid-fight. The gameplay loop is simple: jump to a sector, clear enemies, then move on. If you lose all energy or let the bases fall, it’s game over. The galaxy is split into 36 sectors, each holding enemies, bases, or nothing. Warping between them lets you pick fights strategically, but docking at bases for repairs requires precise maneuvering. While not a commercial blockbuster, its focus on resource management and risk-reward decisions feels surprisingly modern for the Atari 2600. Players needing to repair and recharge before pushing again mirrors mechanics found in far pricier titles. It’s a relic that still rewards patience and planning.
