Starship Command drops you in the cockpit of a spacefaring warship, fending off alien invaders in an overhead shooter. Your ship stays fixed in the center as enemies swirl around it, with larger ships cloaked from view. You’ll need to aim ahead since shots spiral with the rotating battlefield and have limited range. Juggling active shields and scanners is key, each requires energy, which drains as you fire, move, or take damage. Recharge happens when you’re stationary and shields are down, leaving you vulnerable. The fixed camera and energy management add tactical depth to arcade thrills. Survival isn’t enough, you must escape safely and rack up kills to impress Starfleet, who’ll judge your performance from furious to delighted. The game cycles through eight unique starship designs, as stages escalate with faster action and denser combat. Released in 1983 on BBC Micro and Acorn Electron, it’s a relic of early 80s space combat gameplay that still feels tricky.
