Stellar Track is a turn-based strategy shooter with heavy text elements released for the Atari 2600 in 1981. Players command a Terran Super Warship tasked with clearing alien threats across a 6 x 6 galactic grid. Each turn involves scanning quadrants to locate enemies, warping to their coordinates, then choosing between phaser attacks or photon torpedoes. The joystick functions as a numeric keypad for navigation, blending rudimentary controls with tactical decisions about resource management and positioning. The game’s barebones presentation highlights its status as an early home console strategy experiment. Despite its primitive graphics and text-based interface, it demands careful planning to balance offensive and defensive needs while managing limited warp capabilities. As one of the few strategy titles on the Atari 2600, it appeals to retro gaming enthusiasts and fans of old-school sci-fi tactics. Its roots in a 1970s university mainframe Star Trek game add a niche historical curiosity to the experience.
The Terran race, even though they have high standards in art, philosophy, and science, is lacking hyperwarp drive technology, which would allow them to travel to other planets. The Terrans became discovered by extraterrestrial life, who allowed a trade of their hyperwarp technology for Terran art and science. Tension between the aliens and Terrans begin as the two races started competing over riches, so the Terran government built an indestructible Starfleet and two Galactic Starbases to keep the aliens at bay, recruiting a commander for their Super Warship to destroy the aliens.
