"Stray won't challenge you, frustrate you, or take up too much of your time. Perhaps that's why we enjoyed it so much. It plays like an open-world point-and-click paired with largely on-rails action sequences. Some minor gripes and expected disparities between the Switch port and versions elsewhere aside, as we sauntered around its post-apocalyptic environments on all fours, Stray did an impeccable job of making us want to talk to everyone and explore everything it had to offer – and we had an appetite for more once it was all over. To us, that's the mark of a compelling adventure."

Stray launches players into the role of an ordinary stray cat trapped in a large cybercity filled with neon lights and rusting metal. BlueTwelve Studio created this indie title while Annapurna Interactive handled publishing back in July 2022. The game arrived on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Switch, and Mac as a single-player adventure. You explore a decaying metropolis inhabited by robots and strange creatures. Your goal is to find your way out after losing your family. This third-person platformer lets you jump across rooftops and squeeze through tight ventilation shafts. The setting feels lived-in yet eerie, blending gritty industrial zones with glowing high-tech areas. It is a short but memorable journey that focuses on exploration and atmosphere rather than combat prowess or complex systems.
You control the cat from a fixed camera angle behind your shoulders. Movement feels fluid as you sprint, climb fences, and pounce on enemies. You can meow to get attention or knock over objects to cause chaos. The environment reacts to your weight and momentum in satisfying ways. A small drone companion named B12 helps you solve puzzles by hacking terminals or scanning paths. Combat is mostly about stealth and using the cat's agility to dodge attacks from hostile machines. You will spend hours simply interacting with the world by knocking over cups, sleeping on warm spots, and playing with toys. The controls translate real cat behaviors into game mechanics that feel natural rather than scripted. Sessions often involve finding hidden items or unlocking new areas through clever use of your environment.
PlayPile data shows this title resonates strongly with players who love story-driven games. Critics gave it an OpenCritic score of 84 out of 100 and 85.19% of reviewers recommend it. IGDB rates the game at 83.5 based on 660 user ratings. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgic vibes with five votes, followed by story-driven content and cooperative elements despite being single-player. VG247 called it triple-A quality in an indie package, while Polygon hailed it as a triumph by sly cat people. Average playtime sits around eight to ten hours according to user reports. The completion rate suggests most players stick with the game until the end rather than abandoning it midway through the mystery.
Stray is worth playing if you want a short, polished adventure that treats its protagonist as a real animal. The price varies by platform but the value holds up given the tight 8-10 hour runtime and high production quality. You will earn achievements for things like knocking over every vase or sleeping in specific locations. This is not a game for those seeking deep combat mechanics or endless replayability. It shines when you just want to watch the story unfold through a unique lens. The ending lands well even if the journey feels linear at times. Grab it on sale and spend an evening exploring this lonely city with your feline companion.
Lost, alone, and separated from family, a stray cat must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten city. Along the way, the cat befriends a small flying drone, known only as B12. With the help of this newfound companion, the duo try to find a way out.
