"When Unknown Worlds announced they were bringing this one to Switch we were hugely excited, this is one of our all-time favourite games after all, but it was excitement tempered with a degree of scepticism as to how on earth they'd manage to cram the entire experience onto Switch in a properly playable manner. As it turns out, we needn't have worried as this is a super solid port that - besides a few loading stutters here and there and some scenery pop-in that's present in every other version of the game - successfully delivers one of the very best survival experiences on any platform to Nintendo's hybrid console."

About Subnautica

Subnautica dropped in early 2018 from developer Unknown Worlds after a long beta period. It landed on PC first before hitting PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile devices. This single-player adventure places you on an alien planet covered entirely by water. You crash land in a pod and must swim out to survive. The game mixes open world exploration with heavy survival mechanics. You start with nothing but a knife and have to build tools from scratch. It feels like a sci-fi mystery wrapped in a deep sea simulator. Players control their own fate as they push past the safety of shallow reefs into terrifying depths.

Gameplay

You wake up damaged and gasping for air. Your first goal is finding fresh water and food while your oxygen timer counts down. You harvest kelp and fish to craft basic gear like a rebreather or a flashlight. The core loop involves scanning creatures and flora to unlock recipes in your fabricator menu. Building habitats requires gathering titanium, copper, and quartz found by swimming around the ocean floor. As you progress, you pilot larger vehicles like the Seamoth or Crawler MK2 to reach distant trenches. Combat is mostly about evasion since you cannot destroy most predators. You manage inventory weight and oxygen levels constantly while mapping out vast cave systems.

What Players Think

Critics loved this release with scores hovering between 83 and 91 across major outlets. Destructoid called it a serene adventure suitable for a desert island while IGN praised its template for open-world survival. The community agrees with these high marks, citing cozy and wholesome vibes in their feedback threads. Most players find the story compelling enough to keep them engaged for hundreds of hours. Average playtime sits around 30 to 40 hours for a standard run through the main objectives. Only about 32 percent of players have unlocked all seventeen achievements available in the game. Review snippets often mention the tension of deep exploration and the satisfaction of building complex bases.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth your time if you enjoy solitary exploration and resource management without constant combat pressure. The price has dropped to a cheap $7.49 on Steam which makes it an easy buy. You should know that achieving 100 percent completion requires significant dedication since the average unlock rate stays low. Players who dislike managing oxygen or fear big creatures might struggle with the early game pacing. It is not for everyone but stands out as one of the better survival games available today. Finish the main story once and you will understand why this title remains popular years later.

Storyline

You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful. After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.
