"When Unknown Worlds announced they were bringing this one to Switch we were hugely excited, this is one of our all-time favourite games after all, but it was excitement tempered with a degree of scepticism as to how on earth they'd manage to cram the entire experience onto Switch in a properly playable manner. As it turns out, we needn't have worried as this is a super solid port that - besides a few loading stutters here and there and some scenery pop-in that's present in every other version of the game - successfully delivers one of the very best survival experiences on any platform to Nintendo's hybrid console."

You crash land on a water planet where every direction leads deeper into the dark. Subnautica dropped in early access years ago before hitting full release in January 2018. Unknown Worlds made this survival adventure and Gearbox Publishing handled the distribution. It runs on almost everything including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Mac, and mobile devices. The game puts you alone in an alien ocean with no way back to the surface. You must build tools, drive submarines, and hide from massive creatures while gathering food and water. It is a tense loop of diving deep to find resources then returning to safety before your oxygen runs out.
Your first few hours involve scavenging inside a broken pod for basic items to craft a knife or scanner. You swim around shallow reefs to harvest kelp and fish until you realize the water gets dangerous fast. The core loop requires constant monitoring of your oxygen meter while scanning flora or mining rocks with a drill. Eventually you build a base on the sea floor to store loot and breathe underwater without fear. Later sessions involve piloting large submersibles to reach thermal vents or lava fields where rare materials hide. You craft upgrades for your diving suit and weapons to survive larger predators lurking in the shadows. Every dive feels different because the environment shifts from bright coral gardens to pitch black trenches filled with leviathans.
Critics gave this title serious respect with a Metacritic score of 83 and an OpenCritic average of 84. IGN called it a template for what open world survival games should be while Destructoid scored it 95 out of 100. The community moods lean heavily toward cozy and wholesome despite the scary monsters. Players describe the vibe as relaxing or story-driven more than action packed. Most reviewers recommend it with over 90 percent of critics on OpenCritic giving a thumbs up. The game has a solid IGDB rating of 83.7 based on hundreds of user reviews. People seem to appreciate the loneliness and the feeling of discovery more than combat mechanics.
Subnautica is worth your time if you enjoy managing resources while exploring unknown spaces. It costs money upfront but offers dozens of hours of gameplay across multiple platforms. You will unlock many achievements for finding specific creatures or building certain structures. This title suits players who like tension without constant combat encounters. Do not expect a multiplayer experience since the mode is single player only. The game ends when you solve the main mystery rather than just surviving forever. Play this if you want a challenging puzzle that happens underwater.
You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful. After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.
