Subterranea is an Atari 2600 shooter from Imagic that mixes side-scrolling dogfights with fast-paced alien-killing stages. You alternate between battling enemies head-on and clearing Defender-style levels filled with diverse aliens. Each level requires destroying a set number of foes before navigating an electrified gate. Miss your window and you’ll replay the stage empty-handed. Support for two players adds competitive replay value. The game ramps up the pace of Defender with unpredictable alien behavior and tricky gate patterns. Earning extra lives by staying unharmed through stages adds a risk-reward layer. Though it borrows heavily from existing formulas, the tight controls and escalating difficulty make it tough to put down. Released in late 1983, it captures the arcade rush in a home console format.
