Super Bust-A-Move is a puzzle shooter that tweaks familiar mechanics with quirky twists. Players fire colored bubbles into a grid aiming to clear them by matching sets. Large bubbles in certain levels change all on-screen bubbles to their color with a matching shot. Conveyor belts shift bounce paths unexpectedly and some stages feature jagged layouts or moving blocks that alter trajectories. Small bubbles let you squeeze through gaps before expanding normally. Multiplayer modes add competitive layers while solo play focuses on adapting to shifting level designs. This version drops the pulley system from earlier entries but introduces new challenges like optional chain reactions in 2P battles. Non-North American GameCube releases later added bonus modes including a Space Invaders-style shooter and four-player races. With its mix of strategic depth and chaotic physics it carved out a niche among fans of the genre. The irregular stage designs and unpredictable mechanics keep matches feeling fresh even as core gameplay stays rooted in classic match-three logic.
The gameplay is standard Puzzle Bobble action, but with features brought over from the arcade iteration of Super Puzzle Bobble such as giant and mini bubbles (with the sole exception being co-op.) The GameCube ports outside North America are a later version of the game and includes bonus game modes called "Shoot Bubble" that plays in a similar fashion to Space Invaders and "4P Battle" where up to four players complete their puzzle first before the others.
