Super Contra throws you into a pixel-packed war between two soldiers and an army of corrupted troops. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean return to fight through side-scrolling levels and new top-down sections, blasting mutants and rogue allies alike. The game’s run-and-gun gameplay mixes rapid movement with precise shooting, demanding coordination as much as firepower. Each stage escalates the chaos, with explosive set pieces and relentless enemy waves that test your aim and reflexes. What sets this 1988 classic apart is its brutal difficulty and iconic co-op mode. Playing with a friend turns the challenge into a shared test of skill, as you split screen and cover each other’s backs. Despite its age, the game remains a staple in retro circles, with completion rates hovering around 15% for solo runs. Fans praise the tight controls and escalating tension, while critics note the learning curve can feel punishing by modern standards. Still, it’s a defining entry in Konami’s legacy and a blueprint for side-scrolling shooters.
A year after the battle with the Red Falcon Organization, Bill and Lance are sent on another mission. This time, the alien forces have taken over an allied military base, possessing most of its troops. Bill and Lance must not only fight against their former comrades-in-arms, but also a new mutated form of the same alien creatures they fought during their previous mission.
