Super Hydlide is a 16-bit action RPG that balances combat and survival mechanics with a shifting morality system. Choose from four character classes and navigate a world where every monster kill has consequences. Good-aligned foes only strike back if provoked while evil ones attack immediately. But slaying the former drains your Moral Fiber stat which lowers rewards and eventually triggers harsh traps. Keep your MF above 100 to earn random item drops. The game forces regular meals and sleep cycles with HP and damage output dropping if neglected. A weight system limits how much gear you can carry before movement slows. What sets it apart is the tangible link between player choices and world reactions. The morality mechanic isn't just flavor text it reshapes environmental dangers and loot availability. Combat uses a fast Ys-like system with spells and equipment variety while cut scenes bookend the story about a hero tracking flames near The City of the Woods. Released in 1987 it's notable for its early implementation of dynamic difficulty shifts based on player behavior. The weight system and survival elements feel surprisingly modern for its era though its 16-bit ports got more attention than its original Famicom release.
Many years after the events of Hydlide II, an explosion of flames appeared near The City of the Woods. After that, enemies were everywhere. A young man is chosen to find the source of the evil.
