Super Mario Bros launched on September 13, 1985 as the first real entry in a massive franchise. Nintendo R&D4 built this side scrolling adventure for the Family Computer while Playtronic handled publishing in some regions. You play as Mario running through eight worlds filled with pipes and pits to save Princess Peach from Bowser. The game arrived on classic NES hardware but later appeared on Wii U, Wii, 3DS, and arcade cabinets. It remains a foundational piece of gaming history that defined the platformer genre for decades. Players jump over enemies and collect coins to progress through increasingly difficult levels in a bright, colorful world.
You move Mario left or right across the screen while pressing buttons to jump over Goombas or stomp on Koopa Troopas. Timing matters because missing a jump usually means falling into a pit of lava or spikes. You can grab power ups like the Super Mushroom to grow large and break blocks or the Fire Flower to shoot projectiles at foes. Levels feature hidden passages behind brick walls that only reveal themselves after hitting specific spots from below. Some stages require riding Yoshi while others involve swimming underwater where movement feels slower. Each world has a castle level where you fight a mini boss before facing Bowser himself in the final act.
IGDB lists this title with an 83.8 out of 100 score based on 1267 user ratings. PlayPile data shows distinct community moods where three voters labeled it Atmospheric, Story Driven, and Emotional despite the simple premise. Cooperative vibes appear with two votes while one person noted its Casual nature. The average completion rate suggests most players finish the main campaign but few tackle every secret room or high score challenge. Many users return to play through levels repeatedly to master precise jumps or find hidden warp zones that skip entire worlds. Review snippets often mention how the difficulty curve feels fair compared to modern titles.
This game is worth playing if you want to understand why platformers exist today. The price varies by platform but it remains accessible on modern consoles via backwards compatibility. Players can chase achievements like beating every level without taking damage or finding all secret exits. It is not perfect since controls feel stiff compared to contemporary standards and the story is barely told beyond a manual page. However, the tight mechanics and clever level design offer genuine satisfaction. If you enjoy mastering precise timing and exploring hidden paths this classic delivers exactly that without any fluff.
One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horsehair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin. The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of Bowser, the King of the Koopa. Mario hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People. You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!
