Super Mario Death Row 2: Shroomshank Redemption reimagines the Mushroom Kingdom as a chaotic prison break. In this fan-made RPG, Mario finds himself trapped in the sewers after a botched mission. A shadowy figure steps in to guide him through a series of bizarre quests involving talking totoas, dodging Goomba guards, and collecting hidden power-ups. Combat mixes turn-based strategy with platforming jumps while a nonlinear story branches based on dialogue choices. The game leans into its absurd premise with intentionally clunky mechanics and pixel-art visuals that mix charm with deliberate retro ugliness. The game’s April 1 release date isn’t a coincidence. Developed by indie creator Punkitt it’s a self-aware joke about fan projects and gaming tropes. Despite its low budget the game has earned a cult following for its audacity and dark humor. With over 100 hours of content including Easter eggs poking fun at Mario lore it’s a niche experiment that plays like a drunk relative’s take on a kingdom’s worst day. Best played with irony and a willingness to forgive its many bugs.
